Retirement comes with a lot of financial perks, such as senior discounts. These include discounts at hotels, restaurants or entertainment venues, and, most importantly, auto insurance discounts.

While senior drivers might not have the reflexes and speed of teenagers, they do have a lot of experience, and this can be just as good or even better. Car insurance companies love this. That’s why they’re so quick to offer so many auto insurance discounts for seniors. Here are some of them:

A discount for being who you are

A lot of car insurance companies offer a general senior discount to their clients just for reaching a certain age. It’s because they believe that more mature drivers are safer and that they present a lower risk of filing a claim.

You drive less, you pay less

Another thing that makes senior drivers a safer bet is the fact that they drive less. Retirement means that you don’t have to commute to work every day. And, if you drive less, then the chances of you being involved in an accident decrease dramatically.

All insurers have these low-mileage discounts. They differ from company to company, but this can be a good thing, as it allows you to find one that is right for you.

Club discount

Did you know that joining the American Association of Retired Persons can bring you a good auto insurance discount? The AARP is the nation’s largest senior organization. It has partnered with The Hartford Financial Services Group for discounts on both auto and home insurance. If you’re 50 or older you can be a part of it and get a good discount. For auto insurance, you can save more than $400 per year. And the AARP membership fee is just 416 per year.

Back to school discounts

Well, you don’t really have to go back to school, but back to driving school. Defensive-driving classes can both help you become a better and safer driver, and earn you a great discount. All you need to do is just finish the class and then let your insurer know about it.
