Do we really need rental car insurance? We’re faced with it every time we go to rent a car, and a lot of us get it just to get rid of that added stress that comes with knowing that you’re not covered. But is it really necessary or is it just an added expense?

What you need to know about rental car insurance

A lot of people believe that you can only get rental car insurance from rental car dealerships. This is not true. In fact, before renting a car, you should always have a word with your insurance provider. Check to see if you’re covered or not when renting a car and ask what the limitations are.

Credit card companies can also offer rental insurance. Again, you need to check what is covered and what is not. Remember, just because you’re covered when renting in the U.S., it doesn’t mean that the same goes for other countries.

Finally, if you work for a company with a travel policy, check to see if they also include rental insurance in their program. A lot of companies offer this as a benefit. This way, you’ll know if you need to buy additional protection.

It’s better to have it and not need it than to not have it at all

A lot of things that you already pay for may include rental car insurance. If you’re already protected, it won’t make sense to just throw money away on something that you don’t need. However, you should never ignore rental car insurance. You might think that you’re a great driver, you might believe that bad things can’t happen to you, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t be involved in an accident. If such an unfortunate event does occur, then it’s better to have protection.
